The Phlegms - "Filtering"

THE PHLEGMS - “FILTERING”

Our Arkansas friends The Phlegms are back with their latest face slapping party punk anthem, “Filtering”.  Their first release of 2021 is equally as exciting and bright as the rest of their music. A song about social anxieties, this song dives into the mental mess that is social interaction. Say the wrong thing and you’re weird or annoying, say nothing and you are quiet and boring. How do you strike that perfect balance? By picking and choosing the musings that come across your mind, suggests The Phlegms. “It seems I’m always filtering the details of my wonderings”, which is after all, what conversation is. It’s the sharing of our musings and ideas. It is the things we refrain from talking about because of what it may make us seem like to someone else.

This song also accompanies a very expressive music video. The band plays the song while huddled together in a small white room covered in scratchy black lines, accompanied by a foam mannequin wearing a blue turtleneck and a wig. The band (except for Avery) wears masks ranging from a striped t-shirt, a bright yellow slug, and a Lucha libre mask complete with one of our modern plague masks over it. As the band plays we see the many expressions of not only front person Avery, but the rest of the band and they’re all wonderful. One of my personal favorite releases of 2021 so far, this song and music video are both 1,000% worth your time!
