Music Video Roundup with Nathan Cardiff
MUSIC VIDEO ROUNDUP
Welcome to our monthly local music video release round-up written by our in-house movie expert Nathan Cardiff. Submit your video for next month’s consideration at blog@manorrecords.com.
Thighmaster - “Jillian Michaels Wellness Cruise”
Thighmaster continue to remain on-brand with their latest visual: a psychedelic re-editing of exercise video madness (courtesy of wizard Fuzzy Optics). The lofi VHS footage lets the bodies sway and stretch with the music, all while nightmarish neon glows even brighter than the original outfits donned by the participants. It’s a hypnotic trip down the workout rabbit hole.
Shun Ann - “Forever”
Filmed in a claustrophobic widescreen, Shun Ann moves from the studio, to a car roaming Kansas City, to a cold, gray parking garage (heavy vibes from All The President’s Men). The minimal approach lets us focus on the artist directly, his delivery front and center. All the while the fluorescent lighting draping his face in shadows as the camera orbits around him. Expertly done while not overdoing it, the “keep it simple” approach is always welcome.
Fritz Hutchison - “All The Way From Here (Happy Holidays)”
Spring is approaching, but let’s not forget the sting of winter so quickly. In a video he shot and edited himself, Fritz Hutchison salts and shovels stairs and sidewalks, all while lamenting the lonely holidays of 2020. Vibrant houses light up a depressing sky as Fritz goes about his routine with caring detail. The gloomiest days are given a warm heart by small gestures.
The Black Creatures - “D’ummm”
Maybe it’s dreams of warmer days or memories of a pre-pandemic world but the video for “D’ummm” has me jonesing for block parties and late summer nights with friends. The duo bounces between sun soaked exteriors with the remnants of a demolished building and neon drenched hallways complete with tarp covered mannequins (I think?). It’s an absolute vibe.
Heads or Heads - “What You Want”
We saved the wildest for last. “What You Want” stars a sweatpants-clad computer-generated avatar traversing bedrooms, offices, beaches, the heavens, and beyond. Cats with tubas, giant strawberries, and gargoyles all make appearances. You know what? Just check it out for yourself. Because it is BONKERS.
