“Kansas City welcomes new-age rapper and producer Paris Williams and his refreshing EP “Cocoa” with open arms. Williams recently moved from Muskegon, Michigan in order to be closer to his friends in the local outfit Drop Dead XX. Earlier last year, the creative now-native released his first LP, Drop Dead Gorgeous. His newest, “Cocoa” is the first of a trilogy dubbed Crybaby. Featuring prominent members of the community like TyFaizon, Medici, and Internet Brad, this project delves into the strife and victories associated with youth bound by striking nonconformist rap and hip-hop.

“Gym Class Heroes'' is an anthem for the art kids. Light colors of synth painting in between heartbeat-like thumps lay the foundation for quick-wit to come in and knock it out of the park. “This is not backpack rap” says Williams while chronicling days of skipped classes to make art. Paying homage to Outkast, kids who can’t seem to uncover the meaning behind the countless unnecessary homework assignments, school lunches, and jumble of high school will find a home within this track.

Focused on vague futures, “Youth in Revolt” questions what lies ahead amidst vibrant electronic textures accented with autotune. The words “If life’s a script / if life’s a movie / tell me truly / who directed it / and which role do I fit?” champion the search for identity that always accompanies the plight of youth.

One unavoidable condition not found in the fine print of adolescence is that of young love. Energetic and animated, “Nola” perfectly captures the excitement that comes with first crushes and by the time catchy bounces end, you’ll have fallen in love with her too. Lastly, “Paradise” reflects in the fountain of youth. Williams wades in his upbringing, learning how to swim within its waves. Bittersweet pianos encourage acceptance throughout the slower tempo of contemplation. Sounds of children fade in and signal this coming of age EP is coming to an end.

Paris Williams perfectly encapsulates the complex relatable simplicities nestled within the walls of childhood. The first in his upcoming trilogy, Crybaby, “Cocoa” leaves you eager for more.”
