Girl K - "White Roses"

GIRL K - “WHITE ROSES”

In February, Ice crowds every inch of Lake Michigan. From above, Chicago doesn’t immediately show movement in below zero temperatures. A cold snap and a pandemic should totally blight out any possibility of new sound coming out of the city; however, Chicago’s Girl K have released their new black and white single “White Roses”, an angular post-punk boogie that is almost immediately reminiscent of bobbing and bending knees in a crowded everywhere basement. Kathy Patino’s lyrics are resolute and longing as they perfectly set up the earnest release in the chorus, a power-pop refrain that seems to be an appeal. Several moments of “White Roses” are essentially dire like there is an important decision to be made and in a frozen city with its back to a frozen lake, what is needed is movement.
