CLUB SINISTER - “CLUB SINISTER” EP

New and wonderfully dark Kansas City band Club Sinister has recently released their debut EP! Highly anticipated following two single releases, they absolutely did not disappoint. Their sound feels like a marriage of The Stone Roses and Bauhaus; bleak, rhythmic, and very 80’s. Club Sinister’s chilling lyrics and ghostly music make them a band to keep your eye on in 2021!

The EP kicks off with the sparkling and thought-provoking “Back from the Grave”, a piece about loss and purpose. The drawn-out vocals make it gentle and introspective, with a clear sense of longing set against a dreamy soundscape. A swift change of pace brings us to the second track “Beyond Bleeding''. Proudly flaunting their 1980’s influence and packed with harmonies, this tune is worth a good rhythmic head nodding throughout.

Slowing things down again, “Pain” begins with a thoughtful guitar and an amazing wobbling electronic crescendo before bleeding into the protracted vocals. This one really stood out as one of my favorites due to the sounds used and the atmospheric mess the song becomes. Up next, the alluringly black “No Relief” is a tale of failure and hopelessness. The consistently strong drums in this album shine in the intro and the wavy guitar adds to the disorientation of the lyrics.

I think it’s worth noting that someone on Instagram said this next song made them feel “young again, and the same amount of depressed.” “Sheol” has some of the best verses of this album which really turn this love song into a celebration of darkness. Club Sinister brings the EP to a close with their final track “Creeping Towards the Deep End”. Just as perfectly gloomy as the rest, its slow and psych-y melody is dreamy, despairing, and desperate.
