“Ruin Your Life” starts with a soft strum and the gentle vocal of singer-songwriter Daniel Gum. He lets his sweet falsetto appear right before the drums and a soaring electric guitar join in. His cadence is hypnotizing, seemingly his own call-and-response, thoughts spilling out in a beautiful display of exposure. Gum makes the stakes as large as possible, singing about the outcomes in a decision: taking a leap and talking to someone. There’s nothing melodramatic in the prospect of heartbreak and the internal struggle you can feel. He conveys this with a lovely pop sensibility and a lingering wonder on what the outcome could be. An anthem for the restless sleeper; the anxious mind; the hopeless romantic.”
