KHRYSTAL.
(Kansas City)
Khrystal. is a multi-talented artist that hails from Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas. Her melodic sounds, nostalgic rhyme schemes, and capturing presence, has Khrystal. named as “one of the city’s most talented purveyors of Black Girl Magic”. Her natural awkwardness and ability to embrace those quirks proves to work in her favor with the crowd every time. Infusing her classical piano training, her love for the bass guitar, and melodic raps, Khrystal. creates a fusion of engaging soulful sounds that is hard to find anywhere else.
Khrystal. began self-releasing music in 2017 with singles “Culprit (My Fault)” & “Melanin Poppin’”. She quickly followed up those singles with her debut EP The Glow Up in 2017. In the year 2018 she continued the trend of releasing singles with “Some People” & “Suspect (Scrub 2.0)” alongside her first album The Awkward Muva. As she propelled forward in the Kansas City music scene in 2019 Khrystal. kept the music coming with a trio of singles titled, “Her Eyes”, “Her Rose”, & “Blue”. Khrystal. released one more single in 2020 before signing with Manor Records with the track “You, Again”, which is also the B-side to the recent cassette release. After signing with the label, Khrystal. has contributed to a local fundraiser compilation album with her cover of Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do” and performed a live stream set to help fund The Greenline Initiative.
Magic was released on limited edition cassingle cassette via Manor Records earlier this year & is now out streaming everywhere. Writer Michelle Bacon of local NPR affiliate 90.9 the Bridge states that Khrystal., “waxes poetic on the beauty of melanin and natural hair, while protesting appropriation. She dismisses the “culture thieves” who position themselves to uplift Black women while simultaneously categorizing and undervaluing them. But in her eyes, the song is intended to give Black women — including Khrystal. herself — some of that genuine power and “magic” back.”
