Ahead of next month’s highly anticipated The Fempire Strikes Back, True Lions (Alison Hawkins and Company) have released their first single “Communion Day.”

It paints the picture of a religious Midwest upbringing, that could simultaneously conjure a rush of nostalgia and disdain. The lyrics fit perfectly with the anxious energy of youth clashing with stuffy traditions. There’s an added layer of personal connection as someone with siblings and the feeling of attending a ceremony for them, while wanting to be ANYWHERE else. The group vocals closing out with the threat of taking a cherished doll is a bit of dark comedy, that lets us remember items from our childhood that meant the world to us and that fear of losing them. There was no worse fate.

“Communion Day” plays out over vibrant keyboards, twangy guitars, dizzy strings, and percussion that never lets up. In an ideal world, this is the song that gets everybody twisting at the venue. It’s all sonic energy, with clever and honest lyrics. True Lions can take a dusty memory and breathe new life into it with poppy reminiscing and captivating detail.
