Nuance in American Folk music depends on where it comes from. Historically, the Western songwriters are more free in their reverence while the Eastern folkies call out in earnest from the cold cavern of the city. In the middle of the map, where Folk music started, there is a different sense of reality that is both whimsical and spiritually brutal. It’s more damning than any industrial complex and more free feeling than an unencumbered western expanse. Springfield, MO’s Guinevere Sheafer delineates the eerie, sweet, and creamy folk of the southern Midwest with her debut waltz, “daughter”.

“I will remember the stories they told me and carry them with me...”

Generally, Sheafer’s sound and structure remind me of Angel Olsen’s early recordings in the way the music slowly builds a warm nest for her carefully chosen lyrics. The song builds to include warm country instrumentals that turn the tuneless Mary Travers and more Karen Dalton meets Townes Van Zandt. All the while Sheafer’s earnest lyrics ponder the heartfelt idea that our ultimate duty in life is our duty to each other
