Crime of Passing - "Off My Shoulder / Vision Talk"
CRIME OF PASSING - “OFF MY SHOULDER / VISION TALK”
Crime of Passing is back to give us a taste of what’s to come from an upcoming LP with two singles, “Off My Shoulder” and “Vision Talk,” released on Cincinnati label Future Shock. We’ve gotten glimpses into the band’s cold, sharp arrangements on their two previous EPs, but these two singles (mastered by local KC artist, Ian Teeple!) show Crime of Passing’s ability to hone in on what makes the atmosphere of post-punk and new wave so captivating.
What I love about these two songs is that a lot of the same words can be used to describe them: gloomy, tight, brooding, etc. yet back-to-back they almost sound like they could come from two different bands. “Off My Shoulder” is a quick and exciting punk track while “Vision Talk” is more reserved and haunting. One of the biggest things that unites these two tracks is the vocals of Andie Lunman, which provide a cathartic balance to the band’s pace while not overpowering as the focal point of either melody. Both in shouting over riffs on “Off My Shoulder” and blending in with them on “Vision Talk,” we get a strong sense of poignancy and anxiety that somehow feels familiar and unique all at once.
Goth and post-punk bands have offered a lot of great releases over the last couple of years (Dry Cleaning, Drahla, Dehd, etc.), but I’m really excited to hear what direction Crime of Passing takes these genres. They’ve shown incredible ability to write songs that can pull you in immediately while still leaving you feeling like there’s something big bubbling below the surface, a reflection of why this two-song EP is such a fitting release for them.
