Babydoll - "Flamethrower"
BABYDOLL - “FLAMETHROWER”
To celebrate her 30th birthday, Kansas City musician Madi Monroe debuted a two-song EP under her solo moniker Babydoll! Released on April 7th, this pair is not only a great representation of her style of music but also sets the stage for what to expect from her next release (PLEASE tell me you’ve got an album on the way Madi!). The first track, “Flamethrower”, is an incredibly interesting combination of grungy chords and 90’s pop influence. When I first heard this song it made me think of Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged set; intimate, dark, and disruptive. She also added brilliant atmospheric elements and several attention-grabbing tempo changes which give Flamethrower a modern feel. The second tune, “Wet Noodle”, is an ethereal instrumental with an intriguing name. The melodies are wildly textured but still very gentle and introspective. An artist I would recommend keeping an eye on over this still new year, don’t be a square and miss out on this hit!
