TRUE LIONS
(KANSAS CITY)
True Lions combine strong yet delicate harmonies with clever metaphors, and recall 90s classic lo-fi indie pop, the likes of American “Twee” groups such as Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, and The Softies. Lead songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Alison Hawkins (guitar, keys, vocals) was initially joined by Mikala Petillo “Miki P” (bass, drums, vocals) for their self-released debut EP in February 2019, Cute at Best, with the help of tracking engineer Ross Brown (Fullbloods, Shy Boys). Their songs became locally known for playfully confronting fierce subject matter and calling out sexism in the music scene.
The duo then met drummer Elizabeth Kosko and guitarist/vocalist Claire Adams before releasing their second EP, You’re Not Invited, in November 2019, which additionally featured cellist Ezgi Karakus (Rewound) and saxophonist Leslie Butsch (The Natural M*n Band). You’re Not Invited was recorded and co-produced by Claire Adams, and mixed/mastered by Ian Dobyns (Dreamgirl) and Chase Horseman (Chase the Horseman). Miki P soon left the group, but was preceded by bassist/vocalist Teri Quinn.
In 2020, the group signed to Kansas City D.I.Y. label Manor Records. Ultimately, the band’s authentic, catchy songs reveal a passion for creating music specifically “by womxn,” inspired by the Riot Grrrl feminist punk movement. The group continues to work through the pandemic by releasing a few at-home demos, contributing to fundraiser compilations, and performing live sets to raise money & awareness for others in the Kansas City community.
Writer Anna Selle of Hear Queer states, “though most of their lyrics tackle heavy topics, like misogyny in the music industry and inane copyright battles, their melodies are light and punchy, silly and danceable. Something about the band’s presence and authenticity allows their audience to dive in with them to a euphoric and affirming state of being.”
