Wayne's World International Series - June 2021
Wayne’s World - June 2021
Welcome to Wayne’s World! This is a new monthly feature put together by Manor team member Wayne spotlighting music made by not-Americans. Music made in the states is incredibly well represented abroad due to the prominence of our language, so sometimes we have to work a little harder to diversify the music we listen to. Here you can expect to find 3 albums made in any period anywhere around the globe!
We hope y’all enjoy!
Shigeo Sekito - “Special Sound Series Vol. 2: The Word”
This album popped up in an instagram story of someone I follow a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to stop listening since. Shigeo Sekito’s instrumental album from 1975 is as adventurous as it is relaxing, basically a 70’s version of vaporwave meets shoegaze. Sekito is an electone player from Japan who draws an incredibly wide influence from Chopin to Flamenco to Jazz. One of the tracks on this album will sound familiar as it was the sample Mac Demarco used for his classic “Chamber of Reflection”. It’s available on Spotify HERE.
Sundata - “New Morning”
Sundata is the project of filmmaker, singer and producer Felipe Casas based in Pubela, Mexico. His first self produced EP, New Morning, from 2020 was a crazy fun introduction of himself onto the world stage. His sound is dark yet danceable and very heavily inspired by Post-Punk and Russain Darkwave. Put on your heaviest eyeliner, single cross earring and pearls for this clubby, synthy night out in your living room! Available on bandcamp HERE.
Olima Anditi - “Where Else Would I Be?”
This is probably one of my favorite, not new, albums I’ve found so far this year. Olima Anditi is a bit of a mystery, many claim that he is a fraud and not the real Olima Anditi, others claim he is the real deal and a political hero. What for, I can’t find any info on. All I could find is that this album was recorded in his rented room in the slums of Kisumu, Kenya in 2010 and not released until 2017. His songs have been passed down through many generations, and is reminiscent of Elizabeth Cotten and Mississippi John Hurt, but as simple as it possibly could be. You can listen via Bandcamp HERE.
