SINGLE REVIEW :: Forest Porridge - "Next To My Dog"
Forest Porridge - “Next to My Dog”
The second of a series of singles released by Forest Porridge (Colin Martin) in 2019, following “Keep Smiling (Don’t Cry).”
“In contrast with his last single, which was complexly layered with electric guitars, drum machines, and vocal effects, “Next to My Dog” is stripped back to the bare minimum. Intricately plucked guitar paves the way for Martin’s soft croon. The first half of “Next to My Dog” is filled with sadness and regret; self-loathing and anxiety. Tension builds until Martin finally gives in, as the song’s title is revealed in the lyrics: “Please, bury me, bury me. All in the backyard, right next to my dog.”
Detuned synths layer the track with an eerie quality, as Martin pleads to be buried next to his beloved companion. The song concludes with a sense of innocence lost. Childlike optimism is dead, buried in the back yard. But maybe now, with the past deep underground, Martin can move forward. “
